SunBurst Youth Camp 2005 Singapore 10th - 17th Dec 2005
I've just came back from my camp in Spore yesterday. Wanted to write this yesterday but i'm just too tired... 10 of us were selected to represent Malaysia for this camp which consist of...
Ahmad Syahmi Mohd Khairul Aiman Gurmeetpal Singh Tay Yong Liang Muhd Nabawi Nur Hana Veronica Choong Izyan Bahirah Siti Syuhaida Mrithula Shiva
3 days before the camp, we delegates were gathered at Empress Hotel near KLIA. There, we are to get to know each other and prepare for our seminar, exhibition & cultural night. Those 3 das were fun! Our chaperon - Cik Haryati, is one of the coolest person you can ever meet as a chaperon! So lucky we've got her!!! Khairul, our leader for presentation, did an awesome job for the seminar presentation. His partner is Mri, our very very chun dancer! Me however, somehow got the cultural night presentation leader post along with Awi.. Gurmeet & Izyan were our luggage leaders.. Hehehe.. Those three days was really really fun! Misses it loadz!
Day 1 - 10th Dec 2005 Now.. To the REAL thing.. We left Empress Hotel at 10am on the 10th and headed to the airport. We arrived at Spore around 1pm and were greeted warmly and enthusiastically by the Spore delegates. My roommate - Xiu Jing came up to me and was like "Are you Veronica? Owh.. You're my roommate!" In the midst of awe.. I was kinda blur and just replied.. "Owh" and shaked hands with her.. After registration, we were asked to go up to our room. After putting down the bags, we lepak for a while and headed back to the auditorium for our briefing.. After that, we went up to our rooms once again and wait for the fire drill.. Then, my 'neighbours' came over and introduced themselves.. Tony & Fadhli (both from Brunei). Just as we were about to sit down and make ourselves comfy, the fire drill rang! And we have to leave the room and gather at the carpark.. Thank goodness i remembered my keys! After that, we had our dinner.. At the dinner table, we were all mixt around so i got to know new people from other countries. After dinner, we're free to do whatever we want - like shopping. But we have our curfew at 12 midnight, meaning everyone has to be back at the hotel by then. We (Malaysia delegates) didn't go out on the first night though.. We're in our chaperon's room, discussing our presentations. The guys have to practice thier dance too! Oh yeah.. My other roommate is from Phillipines - Eda. She's 19 and Xiu Jing's 17.. I'm the youngest in that room. LoLz!
Day 2 - 11th Dec 2005 Day 2 were spent at the OBS at Pulau Ubin. After having our breakfast at 7.30, we were assembled at the auditorium hall for our briefing. After that, we took a bus to Punggol Point Jetty. Since there're so many countries there, we were divided into 4 diff buses by countries. We're in Bus 2 along with Laos & Singapore (Cultural Night) delegates. Our bus IC is... Luqman! We reached OBS around 9am. After a short briefing by the course director, we were divided into 11 groups.
Group 2 Mrinalini Singh (Spore) Seow Xiu Jing (Spore) Leslie Tay (Spore) Jhunjhunwala Vaibhav (India) Anthony Rasiman (Brunei) Ly Sopoirvichny (Cambodia) Wang Beijun (China) Mashita Insani Kamillia aka Mia (Indon) Bounthavy Phuntalay (Lao) Veronica Choong (Msia) Sylvester Amorsolo (Phil.) Pongpruch Sahasakul aka Piian (Thai) Nguyen Dang Trung (Vietnam) Georgia Simone Mitchell Telford (UK)
Our group name is TOO BEAUTIFUL and our facilitator is Melissa! Well, our first game was called 'touch the keyhole' (or something like that). We're suppose to tab at a certain number assendingly. So all of us placed ourselves in front of a certain number and when it's our turn, we'll tab it. Our timing to finish the game was improving all the way but we just didn't make it to the top *sigh*.. After that, we went into the forest and played 'the TOO BEAUTIFUL special tree'. We were all blind folded and have to make our way to our special tree and touch it! It was fun!! Then, the best part came... Rock climbing!! We have to learn the basics of belaying before going for the real thing. Apparently, the climber'll have to shout 'Climbing' when he's about to climb and the belayer'll say 'climb on' when he's ready. When the climber wants to get down, he'll have to say 'Falling' and can only let go when the belayer shouts out 'Fall on'. A belayer is helped by 2 other people called the anchor (who'll help the belayer supporting the climber's weight) and the assistant (helps to loosen/tighten the ropes). Trung was the forst guy who made it to the top! Tony didn't manage it on his first try... Believe it or not, i was the first girl who had got right to the top!! Kinda surprised me too! Hehehe! Seeing that, Tony felt he's obliged to succeed in it as well and he managed to do so on his second attempt! Mia, had made it to the top at her first attempt as well!! *salutes* The feeling when you reached the ground after that success is indescribable! It's just so so cool!!! After that, we played the 'mass puzzle' game. Each team is given a puzzle to solve. The problem is, it's all mixt up.. So we have to run around asking puzzles from other groups! On the first try, all the groups finished their puzzle at 15 minutes.. But in the second attempt, we all manage to complete it at only 7 minutes! Wonderful isn't it? The power of teamwork!! That wraps up the day in OBS for us..
That night, while waiting for the laundry to be done, we gathered outside the laundry, telling each other jokes and all.. ('we' made up of Me, Mri, Pal, Tony & Fadhli) It's a great night! Miss it the most!!
Day 3 - 12th Dec 2005 Day 3 is the visiting places day... This's because the whole day is filled by visiting to various places in Spore which include the NUS (National University of Singapore), SSC (Spore Science Center) and the Night Safari. After breakfast, we assembled at the auditorium - like always and were taught to sing a song by the UK chaperon - Ms Janet. It goes like...
Freinds, Only love can bring peace So let us love With all our hearts Till the day has come When peace is won Till peace is won...
It's a nice song.. Simple & sweet! The whole auditorium is filled with our singing.. Sounds wonderful! After that, we departed to NUS. After a boring (ahem) seminar about Mathematics, we were once again seperated into groups. My group consist of
Darren Choy (Spore) Muslim Albakri (Spore) Leong Hon Loong (Spore) Thiang Xuefen (Spore) Brintha Anne (Spore) Wee Bee Fong (Spore) Anthony Rasiman (Brunei) Hjh Siti Amalina Basirah (Brunei) Veung Chandra (Cambodia) Ly Sopoirvichny (Cambodia) Wang Beijun (China) Wang Qian Yun (China) Billimoria Hasrav Adil (India) Ajmera Tanvi Sujal (India) Andi Ramadhani Akbar (Indon) Mashita Insani Kamilia (Indon) Pele Sivongthong (Lao) Alouno Kouangmanivanh (Lao) Mohd Khairul Aiman (Msia) Veronica Choong (Msia) Amorsolo Sylvester U (Phil.) Go Eda Erica Cheng (Phil.) Kirati Thoednithi (Thai) Pongpruch Sahasakul (Thai) Nguyen Dang Trung (Vietnam) Le Thu Quynh (Vietnam) David Edward Hird (UK)
We headed to the Physics lab and had loadza fun there.. We had this 'ET goes home' thingi which was awesome! My roommate and i demo on this particular machine where we hold on to the electrod of this static electricity generator... After the energy is charged up, we were asked to touch our finger tips together like ET and when we did... A 'pop' sound is heard! Sorta like an electric shock! Very cool! Then... LUNCH!! Since my very nice fellow Malaysian delegates ditch me.. I spent my luch time with Mus (aka Fugly but he's damn hot!!) & Fadhli.. Ekekeke! It's cool eventhough we have to sit on the floor to consume our lunch! Haha!
After that, we went to SSC. There, we're free to walk anywhere with anyone. It's cool! I walked around with Mus! Hahaha.. It was nice!! Then we were playing this Jimmy Neutron genius game.. Fadhli kept on saying that Mus is not a genius coz he kept on getting 'try harder' but just before we leave that place, Mus finally achieve 'Genius'!! Haha.. After that, we went to this theater to watch a very very boring movie.. 3/4 of the people in it slept tho.. Including me.. It was so VERY BORING!!! Then we have this liquid nitrogen demo by the SSC staff. It's cool as well! Dinner was early that day as we had to head to the Night Safari.. We had McD for dinner! Yummy! Night Safari is cool too.. Enjoyed ourselves loadz!! We reached the hotel around 10 something that night.. And most of us were too tired so we headed straight back to bed.. Awaiting the surprises the very next day...
Day 4 - 13th Dec 2005 The day's events began with our usual assembly at the auditorium. After a game of 'name & point a person from another country', we were divided into 22 groups for our activity - Discovery (Travel & Adventure). The objective of this activity is to show the various places of interest to all tourists - like us. This activity is supposed to be in a treasure hunt form but most of the teams just ignored it and spend thier time shopping for souvenirs instead! Ekeke.. Anyway, before our 'journey' through Spore started, we're each given a Discovery Kit that consists of S$10 each, a SMRT card for our transportation, a MRT guide and a Spore map. After stating down where we'd like to visit, we set off enthusiastically! Owh.. My team!!
Seow Xiu Jing (Spore) Toh Soon Leng (Spore) Veung Chandara (Cambodia) Wang Qian Yun (China) Amorsolo Sylvester (Phil.) Veronica Choong (Msia) David Edward Hird (UK)
Yeah.. So the 7 of us set of happily to Orchard Road and board a bus to the MRT station.. Out 1st stop, Bugis! Bugis is very much like our Petaling Street here, the stuff are cheap and all.. I bought most of my souvies there.. After that, we went to other places like the Spore River to visit the Merlion, the Esplanate (correct spelling ar?), the Muzium, Marina Mall and Little India.. It's a pity we couldn't make it to Chinatown though.. But oh well... We had our lunch in Marina Mall. Our 'tour guide', Jing & Leng Leng belanja us and didn't want us to pay them back... Anyway, luch was full with variety! We have cha kuey teow, fried carrot cakes, nasi lemak, curry & hainanese chicken rice! David helped himself with a butter & kaya bread with a cup of coffee (mamak style). He enjoyed it tho! Then I was giving him lessons on how to use chopsticks which he managed within a few minutes! So cool! But that's expected as i am a good teacher... Hahahaha! After our shopping at Little India, we had our dinner.. There, the Spore delegates went around asking ppl to try out durians.. Being adventurous yet hesistant, David took a piece of it with one hand and with his drink on the other.. After taking a bite off it, he swallowed it with the help of his drink and showed a face of disgust! Hahaha... He's a funny guy!! Yes he is!! After dinner, we had to head back to the hotel as we, the Malaysian delegates will be having our Cultural Night rehersal! So we (Awi, Pal, David who wants to come along and I) board a taxi and reached there around 7.15pm. At that time, the other delegates weren't back yet so we had to wait for them. Finally at 7.40pm, all of us are back and we manage to finish our dance - just in time.
Day 5 - 14th Dec 2005 Day 5 is the day when we did our country seminar presentatation. The sequence: -
Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Phillipines, Thailand, UK, Vietnam and Singapore.
All the presenters were given 10 minutes to present their presentation. After each presentation, there'll be a 5 minute question and answer session. Every country had their uniqueness for each of their presentation, making everyone attentive and enthusiastic listening to them, all eager to learn the different cultures all over the world. After the presentation, we had our lunch and after that, we headed off to MediaCorp, Spore's TV & radio station! After a welcome speech, we were once again divided into groups so that we could visit the whole place in a smaller scale.. We started off with a play, where 4 of us is chosen to be the actor/actress of the play. 2 other were also chosen to hold the camera & the mic. It was cool! We've enjoyed ourselves there! I forgot to list down my team members again haven't i... Gosh..
Toh Soon Leng (Spore) Patricia Poh (Spore) Genevieve Ng (Spore) Baldwin Choy (Spore) Mashita Insani Kamilia (Indon) Phouthasone Chounlasa (Lao) Veronica Choong (Msia) Del Carmen Mark Wilson Abitong (Phil.) Then it is visit to the different places in MediaCorp! Owh, did i mention that we saw Gurmit Singh (PCK) there?! He's so cool!!! Back to the visiting... We visited a studio where they were filming a drama with a hospital as a setting.. The studio's so cool! It actually have the setting of various scenes of a hospital there which includes a operation theater, an ICU room and the hospital hallway and entrance! Absolutely awesome! After that, we headed back to RELC and had our din. That night was spent by setting up our country exhibition booth. And our supper - McD! Have anyone ever tried eating McFlurry at 1am?! You should! The feeling is... GREAT! Hahahaha..
Day 6 - 15th Dec 2005 COUNTRY EXHIBITION DAY!! This day, all the delegates are found in their costumes and standing at their booths, explaining to visitors bout their country's uniqueness.. Some visitors are given a lil souvenir from the booth if they're lucky! Haha.. Lucky me.. I got a few souvies from the diff booths! LoLz! The exhibition only lasted for three hours tho as we had to pack up and be ready to go to Sentosa at 12.30pm!
After we arrive at Sentosa, we went to the underwater world. It's a pretty sight as we can see many many different species of fishes and crabs and other sealife there. And we saw sea-angels! They are these little angel-like creatures that live in the sea (like du-uh, the name tells it all!). About 1 inch in size, they look so so cute flapping thier little 'wings'! After that, we're suppose to go to the Dolphin Lagoon and Images of Singapore. Since the gang i was with said that it's boring, we ended up going to the beach instead! Before that, hehehe, I got a tattoo done! It's a fake one of course, but it still looks cool! At the beach... The guys played soccer & frisbees! In mean time, Mri, Fadhli and i walked along the beach, singing silly songs along the way.. Hahaha! Fadhli was being so nice and never once criticise our singing.. Hahahahah! We had our dinner at Burger King.. Since i wasn't feeling very hungry, i just had a Sprite and some fries.. The chaperons are suppose to gather and have dinner with the organizer but my chaperon was with us.. Hahahah.. So we're sitting at a big table and started singing silly songs... Among them are the Kelapa Song which goes like..
Everytime i see (name) my heart BERGONCANG Everytime i think of you PAGI DAN PETANG I forget to eat my MAKAN Coz there's no other boy/girl but this one..
Underneath POKOK KELAPA i will wait for you Oh (name) hear me lar don't TUTUP PINTU Coz ur hair is like PENYAPU And i know it is full of KUTU!
We called some guys that understands Malay and sang that song to them.. Amongst them includes Ah Liang, Awie, Shahmi, Khairi, Mus, Fadhli and Tony! Haha.. then we made up another song for Awie which is the same as the 'lion sleeps tonight' song but we altered the lyrics.. It goes like this...
Awie...... Eeeeeee wi wum wum bow ey... Awie bow wum (x4) In the hotel, the mighty hotel, Where Awie sleeps tonight... In the hotel, the mighty hotel, Where Awie sleeps tonight... Awie...... Eeeeeee wi wum wum bow ey... (x2)
That annoyed him no end! Hahahaha... After our musical fountain show, we went back home. And we dedicated our kelapa song to our bus IC, Luqman!! Hahahaha! It's cool! He, on the other hand, finds it cool and laughed bout it! Hahahha.. Man, Luq's cool! After cleaning up, we had another meeting at the laundry again.. This time is ME, Tony, Mri, Pal, Clare & Khairul.. Fadhli slept! This meet up is more like a sleeping meet up.. seriously! Khairul, Clare & Mri fell asleep.. left me, Tony & Gurmeet doing the talking.. Sigh.. We all slept around 2am that day... Dreading for the last day to come...
Day 7 - 16th Dec 2005 The last day of SYC.. This whole day were spent doing rehersals and preparations for our cultural night.. Nothing else were done but that and only that... After all the presentations were done, most of us gathered on the stage, dancing to the songs that were played by all the countries.. Everyone didn't want to leave for dinner... Hugs were shared and tears flown from many eyes.... But we had to leave for dinner so we had to leave... During dinner, i was once again giving chopsticks lessons to the UK delegates.. They did it rather well though, at their first attempt. Lewis tried to carry a chicken head to Clare's plate but it dropped into a glass of tea on the way there.. So it's blobbing up and down the tea. That was a funny sight! Everyone at the table was laughing their heads off! Hahahahah! After dinner, we went to the auditorium to dance aka clubbing! Tony & I attended it together as my other fellow delegates (the girls) went out to Mustaffa's for shopping.. Hehe.. It's nice.. But i gotta drag Tony to dance! Luqman was dancing like a pro there!! Ans Mus kept on saying the he can't dance but he's a liar!! He can dance friggin well!! ALong wif Jing, they made an awesome dance couple!! Overall.. it's cool but the party ended at 1am.. *sniff sniff* So we had to find other options elsewhere.. Hahahaha! That night was a very memorable one for me..
Day 8 - 17th Dec 2005 The departure day... I dun wanna elaborate much on this day as it brings back sad memories.. Everyone dreaded this day since the beginning of this camp... But as Mus had said, be glad that WE have been chosen to represent our country, WE are the ones who had smiled, laughed, joked and cried together and WE are the lucky ones who had had the chance to know each other.. Which is a very very very rare thing. Anyone else could have been chosen but since WE are the one, smile and keep those great memories imprinted in our heart! Man, Mus, your good!
Well.. I guess that wraps up all bout my trip to Spore SYC 2005! Owh... We did have an unfortunate event. David, our cheerful, cute lil UK delegate, had appendicitis and had to undergo an operation.. He's okay now and he'll be going back to UK on Fri! But it's a pity that he couldn't join us for the lil bit of fun during the last days of the camp.. No matter what, i'm sure he had enjoyed himself as much as we had.
